Moody Middle school student wins FasMart Virginia 529 scholarship
Richmond – The Richmond Braves baseball team has chosen Andrew Cotman from George H. Moody Middle
School as the FasMart Grand Slam Kid for July. Andrew will be awarded a $500 scholarship administered
by the Virginia College Savings Plan and the chance to win an additional $2,500 scholarship in a final
drawing among the winners
The FasMart Grand Slam Kid contest – sponsored by the Braves, FasMart Stores, Virginia’s 529 college
savings plan and The Richmond Times-Dispatch – recognizes students who maintain excellent grades,
participate in athletics and do volunteer work in their communities. This is the contest’s second year.
Cotman, 12, is a rising eighth-grader enrolled in the International Baccalaureate Program, an advanced
program designed to teach highly motivated students self reliance, responsibility and the relationship
between school studies and the world. Cotman, who maintains an “A” average in his classes, participates
on Moody’s tack and wrestling teams, as well as in the chess club, forensics team and ecology club.
In the community, Cotman participates in his church youth group, has visited nursing homes, collected
food for the hungry and recently helped build a handicap ramp for a needy family.
