Marketing Communications Intern

We are looking for a talented individual to join our team as Communications Intern. This person will assist with a wide variety of marketing communications projects to increase awareness and participation in the agency’s tax-advantaged education savings and disability savings programs. We're looking for a detail-oriented, strong communicator who can turn complex financial topics into approachable messages and compelling storylines.

Virginia529 employees are currently working remotely due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The status of our return to the office will continue to be monitored in the coming months. The interview process will take place remotely. The candidate selected will be required to obtain equipment and attend orientation on-site at our North Chesterfield, VA office on their first day.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develop an understanding of Virginia529 and ABLEnow programs and audiences.
  • Create personalized content for existing and prospective customers. Research, write, edit and review a variety of marketing communication materials and messages.
  • Collaborate with designers, developers, agencies and other colleagues to develop effective content calendars and marketing communication materials.
  • Create reports on media interviews, earned coverage and clips.
  • Make recommendations on communication strategies based on data-driven insights.
  • Assist team with the fulfillment of additional requests and projects as needed.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • College student, recent graduate or comparable combination of education and experience in communications, public relations, journalism, marketing, or related field
  • Excellent writing, editing and presentation skills. Familiarity with AP Style preferred
  • Interest in personal finance, education and disability topics
  • Ability to work independently and handle multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Proficiency with MS Office products including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; experience with internet research and database management tools a plus
