Pros and Cons of Using Prepaid529 for Summer Sessions

Summer will be here before we know it! With the new season comes the option for summer sessions at colleges and universities.

Taking courses over the summer can make a big difference in a student’s academic career. Classes are smaller and can be more relaxed, which make this a great option for those looking to get ahead in their academic career. However, summer semesters often provide less “bang for your buck,” with fewer available classes and a more compressed schedule.

Before using Prepaid529 to fund a summer session, consider the difference in credits earned versus a traditional fall or spring semester. If it will pay off, that’s great! If not, you may instead consider paying out of pocket or using funds from a 529 savings account such as Invest529.

Please see the Prepaid529 Program Description & Master Agreement and the Prepaid529 Benefits Guide for more details on the use of your Prepaid529 benefits. If you have more specific questions about using your Prepaid529 account for summer sessions, please feel free to contact Virginia529.
