We are hiring a Software Engineer who will develop AWS software solutions for our financial system and its supporting database system, middleware, and integration layers. In this position, you will:

  • Build REST APIs, microservices, serverless integrations and other similar technologies to efficiently integrate new services with our existing systems
  • Design database structures for optimal usage in our environment
  • Develop and build specifications for large-scale initiatives utilizing AWS technologies, domain driven design, and container architectures
  • Perform code review and provide feedback to the team on how to effectively develop and maintain database systems that are secure and well architected
  • Investigate and research new tools and technologies, and make recommendations on how they can optimize the use of our applications
  • Continuously develop your skills through agency-paid professional development opportunities

Successful candidates will have:

  • An undergraduate degree in computer science, engineering, mathematics, or a related field
  • 3-7 years of experience in autonomously designing and developing complex systems involving multiple technologies and interfaces; an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
  • Experience architecting and building applications that maintain and provide easy user access to the information they need
  • Proficient in designing, and deploying solutions in AWS (CDK, Container Services, ECR, Fargate, ECS, API Gateway, CodeBuild, Route53, Networking etc.)
  • Experience with cloud services, container architecture, feature flags, APIs
  • Experience using some or many of the following: Node Express and/or GraphQL, , JavaScript and/or Typescript, JSON, JAVA, and/or SQL.
  • Experience with Integrated Development Environments such as SQL Developer, Visual Studio Code, or some equivalent
  • Experience testing and evaluating performance of database applications using test automation  
  • Proficient in multiple product management methodologies (e.g. Agile Scrum, Kanban).
  • Familiar with Windows operating system
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with ability to identify, formulate and solve software engineering problems
  • Broad knowledge of current technology and best practices and understanding how to assess the feasibility of incorporating technologies into our application framework
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, sufficient to explain complex technical problems to diverse audiences

Work Environment:

  • Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, all Virginia529 employees are working in a hybrid in-person/remote environment. This position typically works in an office environment with considerable time in a sitting, stationary position.
  • Constantly operate a computer and other office equipment including typing and keying
  • Frequently communicate with team members; must be able to exchange accurate information accordingly
  • Occasional travel required
