When Tanner Johnson was in middle school, he wasn’t sure if college was in his future. Now a senior at Tazewell High School, he knows it is – and SOAR Virginia had a big role in that resolution. Tanner’s involvement in SOAR Virginia led to leadership roles in community activities, including working with the animal shelter and serving as a mentor for middle school students. These responsibilities added to his already busy schedule – he’s played football most of his life, receiving the 2016 Lineman of the Year award from the All-Southern Empire Conference, and worked part-time at the local supermarket for three years. SOAR Virginia helped him manage his time, gain confidence and see college as a real possibility. He plans to attend University of Virginia Wise in fall 2017.
